About Pierogi

Pierogi are Polish dumplings made from an unleavened wheat-flour dough (flour and water, sometimes egg). The dough is usually folded into a half-circle around a filling: potato with curd cheese (ruskie), sauerkraut or cabbage with mushrooms, ground meat, or fruit. They are simmered until they float, sometimes fried in butter afterwards, and served with melted butter, sour cream, fried onions or bacon.

Also known as pierogies or pyrohy.

What changes the numbers

  • Boiled or pan-fried. Boiling adds no fat. Pan-frying afterwards adds whatever butter or oil ends up on the dumplings; one tablespoon of butter (14.2 g) is about 102 kcal.[4]
  • Filling. One Polish maker's labels (U Jedrusia, as recorded in Open Food Facts) list 146 kcal per 100 g for sauerkraut and mushroom, 164 for potato and curd cheese (ruskie) and 209 for meat.[5]
  • Brand of frozen pierogi. The 230 kcal per 100 g this page uses sits above the boiled-pierogi labels: Mrs. T's Classic Cheddar lists 230 kcal for 4 pieces (152 g), about 151 kcal per 100 g, and the generic USDA entry 195. Pan-fried or richer-filled pierogi come out higher; check the label on your own pack.[2]
  • Toppings added after cooking. Sour cream, fried onions, bacon and melted butter all add calories. The plain-pierogi figures from these sources do not include them.[6]

How to log it

Count the pieces or weigh them, and note the filling. Log sour cream, fried onions or bacon separately, and if you fried the pierogi, add the butter or oil from the pan.

How to calculate calories in Pierogi

Multiply the calories per 100 g by your portion weight, then divide by 100. For the reference 150 g portion, the calculation is:

230 × 150 ÷ 100 ≈ 345 kcal

Reference portion: serving (150 g). This is an example amount, not a recommended portion. Weigh your food when possible: a cup, slice or piece can vary in size.

Check that the entry matches the food you have, including its preparation. If raw or cooked is not specified, check your label or a matching nutrition reference before logging it.
